Mazzoni Center Board of Directors is proud to announce the appointment of Simon J. Trowell as the organization’s new Chief Executive Officer, following the successful completion of a national search process. The announcement was made today by Dr. Jeff Doucette, President of Mazzoni Center’s Board of Directors.

“Simon brings a rare combination of scientific expertise, global leadership experience, and a deep commitment to community health and equity,” said Dr. Doucette. “His proven ability to lead complex organizations through change and his dedication to the mission of Mazzoni Center make him the ideal choice to guide us into the future.”

Trowell is a highly seasoned senior healthcare leader with nearly four decades of experience in the global biopharmaceutical industry. He has held senior roles at GSK in clinical research, education, quality, and risk management, leading international teams and overseeing multimillion-dollar operations. His career achievements include leading a global task force during the COVID-19 pandemic, chairing the Clinical Oversight Committee for TransCelerate Biopharma Inc., and sponsoring enterprise-wide systems to improve clinical documentation and compliance.

He joined Mazzoni Center Board of Directors in January 2024 and was appointed Board Secretary in July of that year. He stepped into the role of Interim CEO in March 2025, where he quickly demonstrated his ability to lead with transparency, resilience, and strategic clarity during a time of organizational transition. Under his interim leadership, the Center initiated a new 3–5-year strategic plan, defined core organizational values, and launched new revenue-generating programs.

“I am honored to accept the role of CEO and continue serving Mazzoni Center’s community,” said Trowell. “This organization is a cornerstone of health and wellness for LGBTQ+ individuals in Philadelphia and beyond. I look forward to working with our dedicated staff, board, and partners to expand our impact and uphold our values of respect for people, patient and client focus, inclusivity, and integrity.”

Simon holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry from Loughborough University of Technology. He has lived in the Philadelphia area since 2002 and is an active member of the community, including service with the Philadelphia Department of Public Health’s Medical Reserve Corps.

Dr. Doucette added, “Simon’s leadership is already making a difference. We are excited for what lies ahead and confident that Mazzoni Center will continue to thrive under his guidance.”
