Building youth LEADers

On Saturday, March 17 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM Mazzoni Center will present our annual LEAD event, aimed at high school students who are active or wish to become involved in the citywide GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) Network.

This year LEAD will take place at Science Leadership Academy, 55 North 22nd Street.  The event will include interactive workshops for youth and adults, spoken word performances, as well as raffles and give-a-ways.

In previous years LEAD has been promoted to current GSA participants, but this year we are inviting ALL interested high school students.

As Mazzoni Center Education Manager Louie Ortiz explains, “our intention is to reach out to young people who are interested in the movement, but may not have the luxury of having a GSA already established at their schools.”

Louie and his team are also inviting GSA sponsors, parents, and teachers to participate in the March 17 event. “Our hope is to provide them with practical tools on how to start, maintain, and support GSA programs,” he says, “since we know these programs make a positive impact not just on the lives of LGBTQ youth, but of all students in the schools where they are in place.”
